West Bengal

This state, always referred as the cradle of civilisation, lies in the eastern bottom neck of India. West Bengal is guarded by the mist-capped, mighty Himalayas in the north and Lullabied by the bay of Bengal in the south. The states of Sikkim, Assam, Bihar, Orissa and our neighbouring countries Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh share the other borders. It stretches over 88752km and has 19 districts. The Bengal region was part of several kingdoms and dynasties over the course of time and history. The Himalayan north, consists of Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts, and the alluvial plains are the major two parts of West Bengal. Narrow terai region separates hilly regions from the plain. Hooghly is one of the major river. The navigable path of the ganga eased foreign trade & communication. The state played a major role in the battle of independence. And after independence, Bengal divided into two. West Bengal remained the part of India and east Bengal became part of Pakistan and later named as Bangladesh.

We can’t limit west Bengal tour destinations in a particular number. Every nook and corner of the state is attractive in one or other way. Kolkata:

Kolkata stands in the left bank of river Hooghly and it was once the capital of British India and still refers as the cultural capital of the country. Rich culture is one of the attractions of this land. The city kindles a nostalgic mood. Calcutta is a city with a soul and with great people. And this is a city of palaces too. Colonial building and monuments adds much to the city. And with music, art, architecture, literature and history…Calcutta has a charm of its own. Almost all monuments are in the heart of the city centred by the vast green maidan. National museum, Asiatic society, Victoria memorial, st. Paul’s cathedral, residences of Subhash Chandra Bose and Tagore, Kalighat temple…….Calcutta itself is a rich tourist destination. Darjeeling:

Darjeeling means the land of thunder. The land is also known as the darling of west Bengal. Darjeeling boasts as the queen of hills. This majestic land sits atop the beautiful, mist-capped blue Himalayas. One can touch, feel and interact with clouds here as the majestic Himalayas stand proudly around Darjeeling. A visit to the tiger hills where the sun rises 1st on mount Kanchenjunga will make your trip fruitful. The Malls, looping railway tracks, tiny, exotic and colourful bazaars, lovely villas and quaint monasteries and dense woods and gardens make the land heavenly. Darjeeling tea is world famous. Sandakphu is the highest range of the state. Here, u can walk through clouds. Spend time in local bazaars. Toy train with its incredible heritage is another attraction. Kanchenjunga range here standing right across the horizon. This range presents the most ethereal sight in the world. Mount Everest, Ghoom, Kanchenjunga, Makalu & Lhotse are some other places of attractions. Darjeeling has a number of Buddhist monasteries. Tiger hills, Batasia loop, the shrubbery, Darjeeling rangeet valley, passenger ropeway, Lebong race course, Dhirdham temple, Mountaineering institute, the mall and Tibetan centre are some nice destinations here. Kalimpong:

This small hill station embodies a beautiful slice of serenity. And from here, one can enjoy the unique view of Kanchenjunga. This is a land of orchids and curio shops.

Sundarban Wildlife Sanctuary:

Iin the southern and northern sides, state has dense woods. The world famous Sunderban situate in the south. This is a designated world heritage site with the rare species of Bengal tigers. This sanctuary boasts the fame of largest tiger population in the Indian parks. Sunderban homes most unknown wildlife like jungle cats, fishing cats, axis deer, wild boar, rhesus monkeys and mongoose. Bengal tiger is the biggest of all attractions, which is seen only in the large mangrove forests of suderban.

Siliguri:

This gateway to north east India is a rapidly developing town in Darjeeling district. The famous toy train leaves here to Darjeeling every morning is a nice way to enjoy the scenic beauty. And this spot beautifully tucked in between the northern Himalayas and the Dooar region of the state. This city serves as a base for exploring other places, Nepal and Bhutan. There are plenty of hill stations, wildlife sanctuaries, river banks, heritage places… that can be explored. Gajoldoba in Siliguri is a paradise for bird lovers. Birds from Ladakh and central Asia are frequent guests here.

Jaldapara wildlife sanctuary:

Jaldapara wildlife sanctuary is famous for one-horned rhino. The river torsa runs through this forest.

Bakkhali :

The second popular sea resort of West Bengal is Bakkhali , situated only 132 kms away from Calcutta , It is quiet and charming.

Beaches:

Digha and Shankarpur are the main beaches.

Festivals:

Dorgan pooja is the greatest community festival celebrated in a massive scale. Falls on Sep-Oct month 4 day long celebrations. It set the state in an altogether different mood which can hardly be believed unless visited. It is more secular in nature. Poush Mela in Santiniketan is another festival.

Best Time To Visit:

October to March is the best time to plan a west Bengal trip.

Climate:

Being a land of mountains and plains, tropical climate with large variations in different areas is the feature. While mountains remain pleasant all the year, plains are hot in summer and pleasant in winter.

Language:

Bengali is the main language. Hindi and Urdu also widely spoken.

Cuisine:

Rice and fish are the main traditional food. And sweets play an inevitable role in Bengali food. ‘Rice and fish make a Bengali is a popular saying.
